Carnival Destinations

June to December 2007

Hosted by Southampton City Council in association with Creative Partnerships (Southampton and Isle of Wight), Thornhill Plus You, local schools and community groups. The Carnival Learning Centre delivered the education strand and teacher training programme for four schools (costume making) and three schools (lantern making). Funded by Creative Partnerships.

A mid-winter carnival to celebrate the launching of the new Cunard Carnival cruise ship. Schoolchildren from the Thornhill area of the town adopted a ‘carnival destination’ as a basis for learning for one term. India, Brazil, the Caribbean Islands and Europe’s own Venice Carnival formed the framework for carnival learning, touching upon history, geography, art design and technology, music and dance. Three other schools embarked upon lantern making, after teachers attended the Isle of Wight’s Lantern Leaders course.

The aim of the project was to rekindle the spirit of a lost Southampton carnival last seen on the streets in the year 2000. Moves are afoot to stage a follow-up in early summer 2008 engaging wider involvement from local community members.
