Practical course covering design for mas bands, introduction to materials and safe working practices, basic skills and techniques for body costumes, headpieces, flags and staffs, simple backpacks.
Group assignment: to produce small two-section costume band for performance at Ryde Lantern Carnival, Saturday 6 December

Starts 25 September for 12 sessions (not half term) £50/£30
Academic study: history and origins of carnival, carnivals around the world, great designers and their work.
Practical Modules include: sewing and pattern cutting, drawing skills, frame building and structural work, creating 3D form, batik, silk painting and textile enhancement, make up and body painting, choreography and presentation skills.
Individual assignment: to produce an individual costume to a given brief for presentation at a local event.

Accredited programmes in street arts, music technology and a National Diploma in Carnival Studies.
